The Great Wall of China is located in northern China, stretching from the Bohai Sea in the east to the Gobi Desert in the west. The wall was constructed over several dynasties, with the most well-known sections built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644). Originally intended to protect against invasions from nomadic tribes, the Great Wall spans about 21,000 kilometres (13,000 miles) and is one of the most iconic and impressive structures in history, attracting millions of visitors each year.
