The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, USA. It was a gift from France to the United States in 1886 to celebrate the centennial of American independence and the friendship between the two nations. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the statue depicts Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, holding a torch and a tablet inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence. Standing at 93 metres (305 feet) including its pedestal, the statue is a symbol of freedom and democracy and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
