Why do rivers sometimes flood?
- ๐๏ธ 10
Rivers flood when excessive rainfall, snowmelt, or dam failure causes water levels to rise above the riverbanks. Flooding can also occur when soil becomes saturated and cannot absorb more water. Natural events like hurricanes or prolonged storms exacerbate this process. While floods are destructive, they also play a role in replenishing soil nutrients and supporting ecosystems in floodplains.
