Machu Picchu is located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, South America. This ancient Incan city, built in the 15th century, sits at an altitude of about 2,430 metres (7,970 feet) above sea level. It is renowned for its sophisticated architecture, with terraces, temples, and stone structures that blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Believed to have been a royal estate or sacred religious site, Machu Picchu was abandoned during the Spanish conquest and rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
