Why do snakes shed their skin?

Snakes shed their skin to grow and to remove parasites or old, damaged skin. This process, called ecdysis, occurs several times a year, depending on the snake’s age and growth rate. Before shedding, a snake’s skin becomes dull, and its eyes turn milky due to fluid buildup. Once the outer layer loosens, the snake rubs against rough surfaces to peel it off, revealing fresh, vibrant skin underneath. This adaptation helps maintain their health and mobility.
