Indonesia is an archipelago in Southeast Asia, consisting of more than 17,000 islands. It shares land borders with three countries. The total length of Indonesia’s land borders is approximately 3,000 kilometres. To the west, it shares a border with Malaysia on the island of Borneo (1,620 km), while to the north, it borders the Philippines (through the sea). Indonesia also shares a land border with Papua New Guinea (820 km) to the east. Despite being surrounded by water, Indonesia’s geographical position makes it a central player in Southeast Asian trade and maritime routes.
