Why does the Moon have phases?

  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ 5

The Moon has phases because it orbits Earth, and the portion of the Moon illuminated by the Sun changes as seen from Earth. The phases include the new moon, crescent, first quarter, gibbous, full moon, and their reverses. These changes occur over a lunar cycle, lasting about 29.5 days. When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, it appears as a new moon. As it orbits, more of its illuminated side becomes visible, reaching a full moon when Earth is between the Sun and the Moon. This cycle is predictable and has influenced human calendars and culture for millennia.
