What causes tornadoes to form?
- ๐๏ธ 11
Tornadoes form when warm, moist air collides with cold, dry air, creating instability in the atmosphere. This leads to the formation of strong thunderstorms. Within the storm, wind speeds at different altitudes create a horizontal spinning effect. When a strong updraft tilts this rotating air vertically, it can develop into a tornado. The funnel cloud becomes visible as it picks up water droplets, dust, and debris. Tornadoes are most common in regions like the central United States, known as “Tornado Alley.”
