What causes earthquakes along tectonic plate boundaries?
- ๐๏ธ 7
Earthquakes occur along tectonic plate boundaries due to the movement of the Earth’s plates. At convergent boundaries, one plate may be forced beneath another in a process known as subduction, causing immense pressure to build up. At divergent boundaries, plates move apart, creating fault lines where stress can also accumulate. When this stress exceeds the strength of the rocks, it is released as seismic energy, causing the ground to shake. The magnitude and frequency of earthquakes depend on the amount of stress and the type of fault.
