How do xerus live?

Xeruses, also known as African ground squirrels, are found in dry savannas and grasslands across sub-Saharan Africa. They are social creatures that live in large colonies, often numbering 10-20 individuals. These squirrels are omnivores, feeding on seeds, fruits, insects, and small vertebrates. Xeruses are active during the day and spend a significant amount of time foraging and digging for food. They live in burrows, which they dig for shelter and protection from predators like hawks and snakes. These squirrels reproduce once a year, with the female giving birth to 2-4 young after a gestation period of about 8-9 weeks. The young stay with their mothers for several months before becoming independent.
