How do giraffes use their long necks?
- ๐๏ธ 8
Giraffes use their long necks primarily to reach food high in trees, such as acacia leaves, that other herbivores cannot access. Their long necks also serve as a tool for social interactions, especially during mating season, where males engage in “necking” battles, swinging their necks to strike their opponents. Despite their necks being extremely long, giraffes have only seven vertebrae in their necks, the same number as humans, but each vertebra is much larger to support their height and reach.
