Why do snakes flick their tongues?

Snakes flick their tongues to gather chemical information about their surroundings. By flicking their tongues, they pick up scent particles in the air or on surfaces. These particles are transferred to the Jacobson’s organ, a specialised structure in the roof of their mouths, which analyses the chemical signals. This behaviour helps snakes locate prey, identify potential threats, and navigate their environment. The forked shape of the tongue allows them to detect the direction of scents, making it a critical tool for survival.
