How do krill live?
- ๐๏ธ 11
Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans found in the world’s oceans, particularly in the cold waters of the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. They are filter feeders and primarily consume phytoplankton and other microscopic organisms by swimming through water with their legs extended. Krill are a crucial part of the marine food web, serving as food for larger animals such as whales, seals, and fish. They live in large swarms or “swarms,” often numbering in the millions, to protect themselves from predators. Krill reproduce by laying eggs in the water, and the larvae undergo several stages of development before becoming adults. They thrive in large colonies and can survive in some of the harshest marine conditions.
