Why do some frogs produce toxic skin secretions?
- ๐๏ธ 10
Some frogs produce toxic skin secretions as a defence mechanism against predators. These toxins, often derived from their diet of ants, mites, or other invertebrates, make the frogs unpalatable or even lethal to potential threats. The golden poison frog, for instance, produces batrachotoxin, one of the most potent natural toxins known. Bright colours often accompany toxicity in frogs, serving as a warning signal (aposematism) to predators. This strategy helps them survive in environments with high predation pressure.
