How do cuttlefish camouflage themselves?
- ๐๏ธ 6
Cuttlefish use specialised skin cells called chromatophores, iridophores, and leucophores to change their colour and texture, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings. Chromatophores contain pigments that expand or contract to display different colours, while iridophores and leucophores reflect and scatter light. Cuttlefish can also change their skin texture to mimic the appearance of rocks, sand, or coral. These adaptations help them avoid predators and ambush prey.
