How do axolotls live?

  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ 19

Axolotls are aquatic salamanders native to lakes near Mexico City. They are unique for their ability to retain larval characteristics throughout their lives, a condition known as neoteny. Axolotls are carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, worms, and even small fish in their aquatic habitat. They live in cool, freshwater environments and are typically found in lakes with abundant vegetation and hiding spots. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls spend their entire lives in water and are capable of regenerating limbs, spinal cord, and other body parts. Axolotls reproduce by external fertilization, with females laying hundreds of eggs that hatch into larvae. The larvae are free-swimming and develop into adult axolotls.
