How do jellyfish protect themselves from predators?

  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ 6

Jellyfish protect themselves using their stinging cells, or nematocysts, located on their tentacles. These cells contain tiny harpoons filled with venom, which are triggered upon contact with potential threats. The venom can paralyse or deter predators, giving the jellyfish time to escape. Some species, like the lionโ€™s mane jellyfish, also rely on their size and long, trailing tentacles as a defence. Others, such as the comb jelly, use bioluminescence to confuse predators or blend into the dark ocean waters. This combination of physical and chemical defences highlights their adaptability in marine ecosystems.
