How do mole rats live?
- ๐๏ธ 8
Mole rats, also known as blind or naked mole-rats, are burrowing mammals found in parts of Africa and the Middle East. They are highly social animals that live in large underground colonies, which can consist of hundreds of individuals. Mole rats are known for their unique cooperative social structure, where only one female (the queen) and a few males reproduce, while the other colony members serve as workers, foragers, and defenders. They live almost entirely underground, using their powerful front limbs to dig extensive tunnels and burrows. Mole rats are herbivores, feeding on the roots of plants, which they can access by digging through the soil. They have poor vision and rely heavily on their sense of touch and hearing to navigate their dark environments. Mole rats reproduce sexually, with females giving birth to a litter of 1-5 pups after a gestation period of about 70 days. The young are raised by the colony until they are old enough to take on their roles.
