What is the main cause of tsunamis?
- ๐๏ธ 40
Tsunamis are primarily caused by underwater earthquakes, especially those occurring along subduction zones where tectonic plates collide. When the seafloor suddenly shifts, it displaces large volumes of water, generating waves that travel across the ocean at high speeds. Other causes of tsunamis include volcanic eruptions, underwater landslides, and, in rare cases, meteorite impacts. As these waves approach shallow coastal areas, they increase in height, causing widespread flooding and destruction. Tsunamis can travel at speeds of up to 800 kilometres per hour (500 miles per hour) in deep water, making early warning systems critical for saving lives.
