Why does the Moon have craters?

  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ 13

The Moon has craters because of impacts from asteroids and meteoroids over billions of years. Unlike Earth, the Moon lacks an atmosphere to burn up these objects before they reach the surface. These collisions created depressions of various sizes, some with raised rims and central peaks. Famous craters include Tycho, Copernicus, and Clavius, many of which are visible from Earth. The Moonโ€™s surface preserves these craters because it lacks weathering processes like wind, rain, or tectonic activity that would erode them. Studying lunar craters provides insight into the history of the Solar System.
