What causes coral bleaching?

  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ 9

Coral bleaching occurs when corals expel the symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues due to stress. This stress is often caused by rising sea temperatures, pollution, or changes in water quality. Without the algae, which provide nutrients and colour, corals turn white and become more vulnerable to disease. Prolonged bleaching can lead to coral death, threatening entire marine ecosystems.
