How do fish breathe underwater?
- ๐๏ธ 15
Fish breathe underwater through specialized organs called gills. Gills extract oxygen from water as it flows over them. Water enters the fish’s mouth and passes over the gills, where oxygen is absorbed and carbon dioxide is expelled. The gill filaments are covered with tiny capillaries that allow oxygen to diffuse into the bloodstream. Fish are also able to regulate their breathing rate depending on activity levels and oxygen availability in the water.
