The largest species of tree by volume is the giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), native to California, USA. These massive trees can grow to over 85 metres (280 feet) in height and can live for over 3,000 years. The General Sherman tree, located in Sequoia National Park, is the largest known living tree, with a volume of about 1,487 cubic metres (52,508 cubic feet). Giant sequoias are not only the largest trees by volume but also incredibly resilient, capable of withstanding fire and drought.
