Why do giraffes have long necks?
- ๐๏ธ 35
Giraffes have long necks primarily to reach leaves high up in trees, particularly in acacia trees, which other herbivores cannot access. Their necks allow them to feed on vegetation that is beyond the reach of most other grazing animals. Additionally, male giraffes use their long necks in “necking” battles to fight for dominance and mating rights. The long necks are an example of sexual selection, as they provide both a foraging advantage and a way to compete for mates.
