Why do giraffes have long tongues?

Giraffes have long tongues, often measuring up to 45 centimeters (18 inches), which are specially adapted to help them feed on the leaves of tall trees. Their long tongues allow them to reach leaves on branches that are high above the ground, especially from acacia trees, which are their primary food source. Giraffes’ tongues are also covered in tough, dark-colored papillae that protect them from the thorns and sharp edges of the leaves. Additionally, their prehensile tongues can grasp and strip leaves from branches efficiently.
