The largest freshwater lake by volume is Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. It contains approximately 23,600 cubic kilometres (5,700 cubic miles) of water, which is about 20% of the world’s unfrozen freshwater. Lake Baikal is also the deepest lake, reaching a depth of 1,642 metres (5,387 feet). It is home to unique wildlife, including the Baikal seal and numerous endemic fish species. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a critical reservoir of biodiversity and a valuable natural resource.
