The world’s deepest freshwater lake is Lake Baikal, located in Siberia, Russia. It reaches a maximum depth of 1,642 meters (5,387 feet) and holds about 20% of the world’s total unfrozen freshwater. In addition to its depth, Lake Baikal is considered the oldest lake, at around 25 million years old. It is home to a wealth of unique species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth, including the Baikal seal.
