How do frogs survive the winter in freezing temperatures?
- ๐๏ธ 5
Frogs survive winter by entering a state of hibernation, during which their metabolic processes slow down significantly. Aquatic frogs, like bullfrogs, bury themselves in the mud at the bottom of ponds or lakes, where water remains unfrozen. Terrestrial frogs, such as wood frogs, find shelter under leaf litter or logs and produce antifreeze-like chemicals, including glucose, in their blood to prevent their cells from freezing. This process allows them to endure temperatures as low as -8ยฐC (17ยฐF). When the weather warms, they resume their normal activities, ready to breed and feed.
