The first commercially available toilet paper was created by Joseph Gayetty, an American inventor, in 1857. Gayetty’s toilet paper was sold in flat sheets and advertised as “Gayetty’s Medicated Paper,” claiming it was a medical remedy for hemorrhoids. However, it was the Scott Paper Company, in 1890, that introduced perforated toilet paper rolls, which were more convenient and easier to use, making toilet paper more widely accessible and revolutionizing hygiene practices. Toilet paper became a standard household item and remains one of the most commonly used personal care products.
