Who invented the electric battery and when?

The first true electric battery was invented by Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist, in 1800. Volta created the “voltaic pile,” which was the first device to produce a steady electrical current. It consisted of alternating discs of zinc and copper, separated by layers of paper soaked in saltwater, and was the first practical method of generating electricity. Voltaโs discovery was groundbreaking, and it led to the development of electrochemistry and the study of electrical circuits. The unit of electrical potential, the “volt,” is named in his honor.
