Why is the Dead Sea so salty?
- ๐๏ธ 10
The Dead Sea is extremely salty because it is a landlocked body of water with no outlet, causing minerals to accumulate over time. Water flows in from rivers, such as the Jordan River, carrying salts and minerals, but it cannot flow out. Instead, the intense heat of the region causes rapid evaporation, leaving behind concentrated salts. The salinity of the Dead Sea is about 10 times higher than that of the ocean, making it one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. This high salinity prevents most life forms from thriving, giving the Dead Sea its name.
