How do bats navigate in the dark?
- ๐๏ธ 10
Bats navigate in the dark using echolocation, a natural sonar system. They emit high-frequency sound waves, which bounce off objects and return as echoes. By analysing the time and direction of these echoes, bats can determine the size, shape, distance, and movement of objects in their surroundings. This ability allows them to hunt insects and avoid obstacles with incredible precision, even in complete darkness. Some bats, like fruit bats, rely more on their excellent eyesight and sense of smell for navigation.
