How do starfish regenerate lost arms?

  • 👁️ 59

Starfish regenerate lost arms through a process called autotomy, where specialised cells at the wound site divide and grow to form new tissue. This ability is supported by their central disc, which contains the necessary nerve and organ structures to coordinate regeneration. Some species can even regrow an entire body from a single arm if part of the disc is attached. Regeneration is a slow process, often taking months or years, but it provides a significant survival advantage, allowing starfish to recover from predation or injury.
