Why do flamingos get their pink colour?

  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ 8

Flamingos get their pink colour from the carotenoid pigments found in their diet, primarily in algae, shrimp, and other small crustaceans. When these pigments are digested, they are metabolised and deposited in the feathers, skin, and beak of the bird. Flamingos that lack these pigments in their diet will appear paler or even white. Their vibrant colour is not only a sign of good health but also plays a role in attracting mates during courtship displays. This dietary link highlights the connection between nutrition and physical appearance in flamingos.
