Why do some animals have nocturnal vision?

  • ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ 38

Many animals have evolved nocturnal vision to help them see in low-light conditions, as a survival mechanism for hunting or avoiding predators at night. Nocturnal animals, such as owls and bats, have larger eyes relative to their body size, which allows more light to enter. Their retinas contain a higher proportion of rod cells, which are sensitive to low light, compared to cone cells, which detect colour. Some nocturnal animals also have a reflective layer behind their retinas called the tapetum lucidum, which enhances their ability to see in the dark by reflecting light back through the retina.
