Kangaroo rats survive in desert environments by obtaining moisture from the seeds they eat, eliminating the need to drink water. They have highly efficient kidneys that concentrate urine, minimising water loss. Kangaroo rats also stay in burrows during the day to avoid the heat and emerge at night to forage. Their nasal passages are adapted to reduce moisture loss during respiration, and their fat metabolism produces water as a by-product.
